How we got here and where we're going
This isn't a particularly compelling performance for Atwood, which dramatically underperforms oil services company Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) on these metrics. Halliburton earned five out of nine passing grades (owing to its dividend), while Atwood musters a mere two. In a more direct comparison, Atwood beats deepwater driller Transocean (NYSE: RIG  ) , which earned only one out of nine passing grades. Are offshore drilling specialists lousy investments in general, or is there something particular to the two we've just examined that makes them lousy?

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Along with announcing earnings, both Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) announced multi-billion-dollar stock buybacks. With so much money on the line, investors have to ask if this is the right move for these two oil-field service giants. Are these stocks cheap enough to warrant the buybacks or should these companies consider other options for those funds?

  • [By David Smith]

It's also noteworthy that, as Williams said, "we are very cautious about North America and continue to see headwinds here as pricing and volumes remain under pressure, and demand for pressure pumping and drilling equipment remains weak." That puts him in Schlumberger's camp, but in opposition to Baker Hughes and Halliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) , which joined together in proclaiming a brightening picture for our continent.

Oilfield services firms have been allowed to work in Mexico, and Halliburton Co. (NYSE: HAL) is especially well-positioned to step up its business in Mexico. Last summer the company agreed to provide production services at a price of one cent per barrel in a new field believed to hold 341 million barrels of oil equivalent. Halliburton has worked in Mexico for years, and the company’s patient spade work is likely to lead to more contracts now.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more Seacor Holdings (NYSE: CKH  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Seacor Holdings's competitive position could be.

  • [By Traders Reserve]

For investors who want a piece of this developing trend, Transocean and Seadrill are two of the bigger players in this arena. Other offshore drillers/rig operators are Noble (NE) and Ensco (ESV).
