But that doesn't mean it was a bad week for the industry as a whole. Here are some of the newsworthy items in solar this week.

Money, money, money
First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) became the latest to offer shares of convertible debt to the market in an effort to raise cash. The company sold 9.45 million new shares at $46 for proceeds of about $427.7 million to the company.

This follows a convertible notes offering at SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) and a proposed convertible notes offering at SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) . Convertible notes aren't a share offering, but they can be converted into shares at a specified price, so there's an equity component for investors.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Reuben Brewer]

Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) is the largest and most diversified publicly traded pure-play coal miner. Its first quarter loss of nearly $0.20 a share doesn't inspire confidence in the broader coal market's future. But the company's global footprint does provide a glimpse of what's going on throughout the industry.

A major reason that basic materials companies weren't up to par today stems from the concerns coming out of China. Not only are interest rates on the rise, but Goldman Sachslowered its estimates on the country's growth today. China, as a major energy consumer, holds huge sway over companies like Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) that not only mine and market coal but act as brokerages for the resource as well. Accordingly, Peabody shares fell 7.2% on Monday.

But Trina gave a troubling update to its quarterly guidance a couple weeks ago, saying that it shipped 390-400 megawatts of solar modules during the quarter, down from its original 420-430 megawatt estimate. With gross margins of just 1% to 3%, Trina isn't faring as badly as peer ReneSola (NYSE: SOL  ) , which posted negative gross margins in its quarterly report earlier this month. Yet Trina still isn't making enough money to come close to profitability in the near future.

There will be winners, though. Shares of polysilicon maker Renewable Energy fell 7% in trading immediately after the announcement because the company will likely see either lower prices or lower demand. But shares of GCL Poly, who manufactures in China and is the biggest polysilicon maker in the world, jumped 4% on Friday after the news was announced.Renesola (NYSE: SOL  ) and LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) also have lots of unused polysilicon capacity that will likely experience more demand because of the move. The question is if they have sufficient quality to supply the industry.

I should mention that just last week, we added GT Advanced Technologies to ourSmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio for bothfundamentals and technical reasons and we are already up almost 9%.

Going through his papers, he found a list of stocks that UBS said to buy if Obama won the election in 2012, including the likes of United Rentals (URI) , First Solar (FSLR),Alliant Techsystems (ATK), Alkermes (ALKS) and Mohawk Industries (MHK). And wouldn’t you know it, those stocks have gained 58% this year, compared to the S&P 500′s 27% gain. And just in case you’re wondering, those stocks have also trumped UBS’s Romney basket, which has gained 33%.
