Hot Electric Utility Stocks For 2014

Traders may not want to get married for the long haul to any of them, but for speculators looking for a quick, profitable hit, Arca Biopharma Inc. (NASDAQ:ABIO), Pluristem Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ:PSTI), and Bacterin International Holdings Inc. (NYSEMKT:BONE) may be better-than-average bets. Here's why.

Until this week, Bacterin International Holdings Inc. wasn't on many traders' radars. The $36 million company that makes coating for open wounds, and though revenue was steady, BONE wasn't profitable, but wasn't expected to be any time soon either. Yet, the chart not only says the market's starting to favor the stock, but this week's bullish nudge looks like it's started a much bigger-picture rally.

Though it actually wiggled its way out of a wedge formation a couple of weeks ago, it wasn't until today that BONE has made the kind of move that (1) gets traction, and (2) gets attention. Now that the ball is rolling with the cross above the 100-day moving average line, it should stay in motion. The clincher is the fact that Bacterin International Holdings shares are making this bullish breakout move on steadily rising volume.

Nucor has already given investors a flavor of what's coming in its report, as it gave early guidance last month that was well below what analysts had hoped to see. The company usually sees a seasonal uptick in the first quarter as construction season starts, but this year, attempts among many steel companies to boost prices led to restrained demand even though those attempts proved largely unsuccessful. Nucor's guidance was consistent with what AK Steel (NYSE: AKS  ) said a week later, as it expected steel shipments to fall by 7%-10% compared to the fourth quarter.

Monday morning, the basic materials sector proved to be a source of strength for the market. Leading the sector was strength from AK Steel Holding (NYSE: AKS) and Thompson Creek Metals Company (NYSE: TC).

My pick of Quadrant 4 Systems (NASDAQ: QFOR) is up more than 360% and an article in today's Wall Street Journal provides much of the story!

The article, "More Employers Overhaul Health Benefits" detailed the travails that companies are having with the onslaught of Obamacare. As the excellent Wall Street Journal article by Anna Wilde Mathews reported, major companies such as Sears Holding (NASDAQ: SHLD), Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI), and others are revising the way employees receive health insurance and other benefits. Some, such as United Parcel Services (NYSE: UPS), are dropping coverage for spouses.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Sky-mobi (MOBI), which, through its subsidiaries, engages in the operation of a mobile application platform embedded on mobile phones to provide mobile application store and services in the Peoples Republic of China. This stock has been red hot so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 88%.

If you look at the chart for Sky-mobi, you'll notice that this stock recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $3.31, $3.28 and $3.40 a share. That bottoming pattern occurred over the last two months. Shares of MOBI have now started to uptrend and flirt with its 50-day moving average of $3.76 a share. That move is quickly pushing MOBI within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MOBI if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.71 to $3.83 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 145,934 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then MOBI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $4.96 a share. Any high-volume move above that level will then give MOBI a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $5.55 to $6.13 a share.

Traders can look to buy MOBI off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $3.40 to $3.28 a share. One can also buy MOBI off strength once it takes out that breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.
